Author Annie Highwater is an author, recovery writer, podcast host, speaker, family advocate and a recovery enthusiast. She is a life-long researcher of Behavioral Science with particular interests in family pathology and concepts of dysfunction, addiction, alcoholism and conflict. In 2016, Annie published her first book, the memoir, Unhooked: A Mother's Story of Unhitching from the Roller Coaster of Her Son's Addiction. Her story is especially relevant in helping us all understand the personal challenges facing the affected parents and family members, and how family dynamics both help and hinder the recovery process. Annie’s second book “Unbroken, Navigating the Madness of Family Dysfunction, Alcoholism and Addiction” was published in 2018. She is a contributor to a book about the epidemic in Ohio, that The Ohio State University published in 2019. Annie is a regular contributor to Allies in Recovery, has been trained in the CRAFT Method and works in her community as a Recovery Specialist.

In her private practice, Hearts At Work Family Recovery, Joanne helps families to empower their love and inspire recovery – their own and their loved ones. She believes that love is strengthened through education, support, and developing the skills to re-connect, and communicate effectively. Drugs don’t win here. Love does!
Joanne is a Certified BALM® Family Recovery Life Coach (Be A Loving Mirror), Certified Facilitator of The Work of Byron Katie, and Licensed Clinical Social Worker. She contributes to MomPower.org, participates with her community Drug Prevention Coalition, and created the Facebook Group, Loving Your Child Through Their Addiction. Joanne also created and facilitates the Moms Turning It Around Support Group where love shines into the darkness of addiction and lights a path to healing, and heart to heart connection for moms and their children. She is blessed with two adult sons, and lives in Arizona enjoying the wonders of nature, gardening, mountain biking, and visiting with family and friends.
Dee-Dee Stout
Coming to Harm Reduction Kicking & Screaming
Dee-Dee Stout has undergraduate degrees in Psychology & Human Sexuality from San Francisco State University and earned her Special Major Master’s degree in Health Counseling there as well. She is a member of the international Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) and received her training in MI in part from the developer, William R. Miller, PhD. Additionally, Dee-Dee has worked in behavioral health for more than 30 years.
As someone with a personal history of addiction, other psychiatric diagnoses, and chronic pain, Dee-Dee brings her personal story to any conversation on these subjects. She is also a longtime advocate for change in treatment including public policy as well as other psychiatric treatments. Dee-Dee is also a longtime advocate for organizational change including requiring sober living licensing and promoting constant client feedback in treatment. She has also helped numerous families, including those members using drugs chaotically, to demand treatment services that respect them and that treat all persons with compassion and not shame.
Dee-Dee has extensive specialized training in a number of methods including: Solution Focus Brief Therapy; Relapse Prevention; Stages of Change; Seeking Safety; Community Reinforcement & Family Training (CRAFT); Harm Reduction Psychotherapy; Client-Directed, Outcome-Oriented work (now FIT/PCOMS); Trauma, and many more.
Dee-Dee has made numerous appearances as an invited speaker at conferences and has been interviewed on television, radio, film, and print, discussing treatment issues, policy, and more. She has contributed to several best-selling books as well as scholarly papers on treatment, including trauma-informed care and is considered an expert in Harm Reduction.
Dee-Dee is well known for her wicked sense of humor and her ability to uncomplicate subjects. Her book, “Coming to Harm Reduction Kicking and Screaming: Looking for Harm Reduction in a 12-Step World,” is widely available and has received positive reviews.
